Resource 4; Exploring the Concept of Online Privacy

"Apply personal security protocols."

This resource could be helpful for teachers presenting lessons about privacy and security surrounding internet use. It could also spark conversation between students and teachers about reality versus virtual reality.

This video "Exploring the concept of online privacy" could be used for lessons about security protocols online. Barnes (2006) wrote an article entitles "A privacy paradox: Social networking in the United States" and it discusses the concerns around young people not understanding nor appreciating what they are sharing online and the reaction that they have if they have a reaction to that information being shared that is not anticipated. For example, sharing a photo on Instagram and not getting as many "likes" as they expected or getting trolled for said photo. This video can help teachers to develop student awareness of what they should and shouldn't share on the internet.
